MR imaging of malignant uterine disease
Abstract
Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging plays an important role in the evaluation of patients with known uterine malignancy.
This paper reviews the FIGO staging system of cervical and endometrial carcinoma and how the various
stages impact on patient management, thereby allowing the radiologist to tailor the report according to 'what the
clinician needs to know'. The MR imaging findings as well as potential pitfalls of the FIGO staging system are
illustrated. Clear guidelines on the MR staging criteria are provided and the relative accuracy of MR and ultrasound
(US)/computed tomography (CT) for the various stages is discussed. Ways of optimizing MR imaging of uterine
carcinoma are also presented, as well as specific imaging signs of uterine sarcomas.
